City schoolsAsheboro City Schools -Asheboro City Schools serves approximately 4,700 students in 8 schools – 5 elementary schools, 2 middle schools and one high school. Additionally, 200 children are served through a five-star pre-school and family literacy program. With a recent focus on high school reform, three strategic small learning communities have been implemented. The Blue Comet Academy focuses on freshmen to ensure a successful transition to high school. The AHS Zoo School, one of four in the nation, offers students the opportunity to spend part of the school day in a project-based, science-focused environment using the North Carolina Zoological Park as the laboratory for learning. The NOVA Academy has been very successful and provides a flexible, on-line resource for credit recovery for students who have dropped out or fallen behind and do not see a clear path to graduation.

Although the economic climate has been challenging, grant monies and other one-time resources allowed for the implementation of a 1 to 1 laptop initiative at the high school, and this year every student in grades 4-12 has access to a laptop. Every classroom is equipped with interactive whiteboards and all school campuses are wireless. Asheboro City Schools experienced a significant demographic shift over the past decade and has embraced a richly diverse student population. Over 20 languages are spoken, 22% of students are designated as English Language Learners, and 67% of the student body qualifies for free or reduced lunch. Asheboro City Schools is a student-centered organization focused on learning, promotes continuous improvement and innovation, and holds high expectations for all.
